Although I have always enjoyed being an active member of the Greek diaspora in Sydney where we have been able to retain many Greek traditions and customs and very strong connections with the Greek community, about five years ago I decided that I wanted a tangible piece of Greece in my life!
Unable to locate my maternal family's ancestral land on a nearby island in the Dodecanese, I began to consider buying a home on another island -- perhaps Cephallonia... Kos... Symi - but how on earth would I go about doing this?
On a trip to the Dodecanese , I landed in Rhodes and as soon as I arrived at the airport there was exactly what I was looking for -- the very sophisticated Savvaidis RHODES PROPERTY NEWS. Inside this glossy exterior was a veritable feast -- fabulous properties to suit every budget and very importantly -- EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW AND DO regarding the buying process. After showing this publication to my husband, he suggested that Rhodes was indeed a perfect place to invest in a holiday home. It was close to the island of my origins so we could experience the best of both worlds -- hop on a boat to nearby islands, stay for a few days then get back to cosmopolitan Rhodes whenever we wanted! If we wanted to travel to other places out of Greece the airport was amazing with plenty of flights to virtually every major city in Europe!!
So even before visiting the Savvaidis & Associates office in town, I somehow knew I could achieve this dream despite the fact that my home was 14,000 kilometres away!
As soon as I walked into Savvaidis I loved it! It was such a 'feel-good' atmosphere. The staff was friendly and certainly willing to listen to what I wanted to buy. I was confident that they would continue to help me find a property in Rhodes when I got back to Sydney.
When I told friends that I was determined to buy in Greece they were filled with doubt-- they refused to believe that it could be anything but a legal nightmare. I won't pretend that there weren't moments of frustration when properties began to be emailed to me. If I saw something that I loved, I realized very quickly that I really needed to see it 'in the flesh'. I suppose at that point in time I began to think it was 'too hard basket' territory.
Miraculously, the night before I was due to fly out, there, on the Savvaidis & Associates website was my dream home in my price range, a beautiful traditional home in the Old Town. It was too good to be true.
That beautiful house was still on the market when I arrived in Rhodes
nearly 3 weeks later! The property did not disappoint -- in fact it was even more beautiful 'in the flesh' than it appeared in the photographs. Almost immediately I blurted out "I'll buy it!" The deposit was down, the conditional contract signed AND this all happened within three hours!! I was utterly exhausted but absolutely euphoric! Meanwhile my children were jumping for joy. They still, to this day, cannot believe that they have a holiday house in one of the most famous World Heritage Sites in the world!
Between the efficient and knowledgeable Cathy, Lee, Savvaidis' very, very competent accountant, and the dynamic lawyer, ALL was achieved within FOUR days.
I still pinch myself....All I can say is WHAT A TEAM!!
Of course they already know that you go nowhere but Savvaidis & Associates if you want to buy on the idyllic Greek island of Rhodes!
