@Vmt16 I understand, although you missed the crux of it - I have an AVI with me right now, that *is* MJPEG. Which makes a meal of your point there ;-) This may not seem to make much sense, I realize, but it's true. AVI is not a format. It just holds other formats, including MJPEG.

@spurrymoses It still comes down to editing. Its a pain for me to edit MJPEG because I first have to convert the files before I can edit them. So for me its easier to have straight up avi or mp4 recording that I can render in avi (720p for example) for YouTube.

@Vmt16 This comment is actually pretty dumb because AVI is not an alternative. The Pentax K7, for example, has AVI and it's MJPEG! AVI is a container format, meaning basically, it has a video streams inside of it, which may be mp4 or MJPEG or any other video codec. It's being recompressed on YouTube so the only way to properly sample this is to download the original file.

@camcorderinfodotcom I'm not sure it's dying out, what evidence do you use for that? One problem is that anything based on h264 (mp4) is patented, even as an end-user, the footage on your camera is subject to their licensing. The holders of that license (LA) currently assure you they won't come after you but they can - research that - start with Wikipedia. Plus MJPEG is visibly much better when the camera is in motion such as panning since it doesn't try to compress interframe information.

Great video. Keep up the good work.

I think the MJPEG is smoother than the AVCHD.
Ahhh, shit, it looks like shit. Who decided cheap cameras should have this instead of good old AVI? MJPEG should die, I hate it. Dammit dammit, all to hell.

@Vmt16: You're in luck. MJPEG is dying out, at least on DSLR cameras that record video. Most are incorporating some kind of MPEG codec like AVCHD or an MPEG-4 compression system. In fact, the GH1 uses AVCHD compression with an additional option for MJPEG. We posted videos of both.
