I recommend headphones. Hit Like if you enjoyed it!

Ludvig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, aka "Moonlight Sonata". First movement.

Played on Yamaha P85 MIDI out to Pianoteq v2.3 "C2 Grand".

This interpretation has major influence from Vladimir Horowitz. The piece is relatively easy to memorise and is technically undemanding. It is precisely due to this reason that it is overplayed while being underappreciated for its potential to show the pianist's level of dedication or lack thereof to the art of music; Moonlight movement 1 will always sound better played slower if done in less than 5m45s. Impatience erodes what it can truly offer to the audience and pianist, which are effectively opportunities to demonstrate and enjoy a mastery of poetic discretion and rubato--this is usually the case for slow pieces. This piece includes many repeated and eventually familiar sequences--my challenge and enjoyment has been in making them sound slightly different every time. The right hand is almost always playing an octave--the mark of legends (Kempff/Horowitz) is the ability to play the pinky note louder than the thumb while ensuring both keys are hammered at the same time, which provides a clear melody over the repeating triads. My favourite chord is at 3:22. I learned to play this piece because I wanted to hear the Moonlight Sonata played in a way that I most prefer to hear. If you enjoyed it, I'm glad.

  • I saw your comment of Kempff's video and absentmindedly decided to give yours a look. When I clicked on your channel, I wasn't expecting anything too epic, but I am BLOWN away. This gave me chills. This is possibly by far the most beautiful thing I've heard in a long, long while. I'm crying. Thank you. Your dedication and love for this music is evident.

  • @musicequalsexistance thanks for clicking. glad you enjoyed!

  • this is THE best version I've ever heard... our society is so all about the past that it doesn't even consider the possiblity that there might be a new Mozart or Beethoven or a new Kempff somewhere in today's world as well...

    you're amazing buddy...

  • @saggoh gee thanks...i wish i could re-record this, on a real piano. ive polished up on certain imperfect spots since i uploaded this. until then, this is it. glad you enjoyed it. currently working on...LvB pathetique adagio cantabile (mvt 2). subscribe!

  • damn. I've got a yamaha P95, am a big fan of Kempff's and horowitz' interpretations too, i play it almost exactly how you do it (same tempo, exact same emphasis points) and my fave chord is the one at 3:22 as well. you did a very good job and hit the nail on the head in the description

  • Very nice. You have really excellent control! And a really nice keyboard, haha. Very clean and well done!

I hope you upload the piano version soon. Do you feel like it's more difficult to play on a piano, which typically has heavier keys than a keyboard? I remember whenever I had to play this piece on different pianos, it always took a bit of time to adjust to the different pressures I would have to apply to the keys to hit the notes at the same time.

  • I like it. A little too monotone for me however. The bass note never really develops and signs on its own .. the repeating triad also is monotone, and the high note could have sung out more. that's extremely picky though - very nice playing. Got a like from me :)

  • Epic! You are really skilled my friend.

  • had an orgasm, very nice indeed! shared it on my Facebook page, hope you don't mind it.

  • man,good work,hope you will be great!!

  • _____ <- That's me. Flattened. Well done.

  • i honestly dont know what made me put your link into my URL bar but something just told me that i should, call it intuition or whatever but you my friend have great talent and this shows your love for music. I enjoyed watching and listening to this. I thank you for not 5:57 mins of my life.

  • i love this
