  • Spacehoppers and sweets they don't make anymore. That's pretty much Peter Kay's act right there isn't it?

  • dan the daggerman from dagenham who tortures you by putting your hair in a fax machine and pressing send

  • @MrVinushka Agreed. I've never thought Gervais ripped off Partridge. Brent and Partridge are in that tradition of lead characters in British sitcoms. There are elements of Fawlty and Rigsby in Partridge too. But what the hell? Partridge is for me the best and funniest of them all, the way his character has evolved from On The Hour right up to Mid Morning Matters is incredible.

  • Quite simply series 1 and 2 of AP are the best thing since Fawlty Towers, Coogan is a genius, The Trip was a sophisticated, funny show, full of him wallowing in self-pity, that I even struggled to be cynical about after it won me over.

I guess Coogan wanted to be more than a home-grown comic genius, but it's a shame he doesn't concentrate more on the UK, and I hope The Trip and MMM is a sign of things to come.

  • i too have driven long distances munching on chocolate when depressed.

  • Never really noticed before the way the camera pans to the "GOD IS LOVE" signs whenever Alan says "Fuck off"...

  • @clydebear Yes, I'm a big fan of The Day Today and the thought did occur to me as well. I think it's easy to draw similarities between the two, and I'm sure Gerv/Merch saw it, but while it may have been a jumping pad for The Office, I wouldn't say The Office is a "rip-off". They're still completely different except for the superficialities.

Otherwise you could go on to say that Chris Morris ripped off Victor Lewis-Smith, or South Park ripped off The Simpsons etc. Everything starts somewhere.

  • @MrVinushka

Actually, The Office is a very obvious rip-off of a segment featured in "The Day Today" (from 1994) which was co-written by Iannucci and Chris Morris to name but two. (The series itself also being the launch-pad for AP himself). Go look up "The Day Today - Disassemblage" on YouTube.

  • @JenniferAubreyAjayi sadly no! There's mid morning matters on the internet and his live stuff though.

  • @tiarnan76 Like I said - influence is not the same as plagiarism. Ricky is the first to admit that Steve Coogan is a great influence on him, but The Office (and Extras) is an original creation.

Plus Coogan himself is a fan of The Office - I doubt he would be if he thought it was "daylight robbery". In fact, I think Armando Ianucci said that part of the reason he was unhappy with AP S2 was because The Office came out at the same time and it looked dated and less sophisticated in comparison.
