Basic Drum Sequencing
In this tutorial we are going to create a club beat. We are going to use Ableton's built in device the Impulse. The Impulse is a very powerful sample based drum machine. We are going to drop in the different sound that make up a drum loop and then use midi to control the sounds. We will look at all the different parameters of the Impulse.
• Start --This allows you to set when the sample will start
• Transpose --This changes the pitch of the sample. Please note that 12 semitones (st) in one octave
• Stretch --This allows you to stretch or shorten the length of the sample
• Saturation --This is a distortion effect. You can apply this to any sample and use the drive control to decide how much distortion you want
• Filters --This allows you to filter out different frequencies. You can use a low pass filter, band pass filter, notch filter or a high pass filter
• Decay --This is the amount of time it takes from the amplitude of the sample to drop off. Please note the it is directly related to the length of the note you insert in the piano roll
• Pan --It is the spreading of a sound signal from one side of the channel to the other ie from left to right
• Volume --allows to change the individual volume of the sample that you are working on
• Global Volume --This allows you to change the volume of all the samples at one time
• Global Timing --This allows you to change the timing of the whole drum loop at one time
• Global Transpose --This allows you to change the pitch of every sample at one time
• Piano Roll --This is where you insert in the notes that you want to play. You can also record your notes in from a midi keyboard or device
