I actually first started tracking this cult due to its presence right on the UT campus front door when I was at UT in the late 1980's. They made the Austin American Statesmen in a couple of stories and it picked my curiosity about the "free IQ" test people.

The Statesman obtained some info regarding the inner workings and was courageous enough to publish it. I recall something about auditing heads of cabbage, and I think they got the Xenu space opera right or close to right.
