    Do the three trucks that aren't in the very front require an operator, or are they all operated off the same system? Do they all share a common brake line, or are they all separate?

    All independent operation and brakes. Use radio coms for braking/acceleration AFAIK.

    Road trains service all the outback towns, quite often the roads are little more than dirt tracks and there are no bridges, only fords for rivers that can get very high in the wet season.

    So yeh, partly to prevent sand/dust/dirt getting into the engine and partly to aid in river crossings.
