The EIA/TIA/ANSI have all agreed on coloring standards for the datacenter. It can be found under "eia-606"
some examples are:
Color (pantone) - purpose
Purple (264C) - Common Equipment (PBXs, computers, LANs)
White - First Level Backbone
Gray (422C) - Second Level Backbone
Blue (291C) - Station Termination (req'd at TR and ER only)
Brown (465C) - Interbuilding Backbone Cables
Yellow (101C) - Auxilliary Circuits (alarms, security)
Red (184C) - Key Telephone Systems

@geoffreyphilip would still be hard with such a large data center, take more than 5 minutes
fastest way would be just to get a coupler.
-
@AcidHeadEd Umm.... its just a cable.... takes 5 mins to use a tone generator on it to find the other end. hook up the cable and it is fine..... duh!

I think you should of showed the guy how to do the trick by giving him his own scissors, and have him do a follow along. Then after the I.T. guy cuts a few wires and starts asking you how to put them together again, that's when you reveal the trick, which the I.T. guy has already done wrong, and the phone calls start flooding in.
The poor tormented I.T. guy might lose his job, have a heart attack and start to cry uncontrollably at the oddest of times, but it sure would be fun to watch.
