Here is my theory/explanation of what really happens in Donnie Darko.

NOT BACK IN TIME IT WAS A TANGENT UNIVERSE

The movie is not set in the actual universe, but a tagent one, and we aren't told how it was created. When a tangent universe is created, an artifact is sent into the universe (In this case, it's the jet engine). A tangent universe is only stable for 28 days, in which the Living reciever, (Donnie in this case, it's randomly chosen, but probably beacuse he was at the epicentre of where the artifact landed) must get the artifact out of the tangent universe. If they fail this, the world will end.

This film literally makes me want to bang my head against a brick wall with it's boneheaded pointless pretentiousness... If Frank the Bunnyman really is time travelling / a ghost / a projection from a tangential universe there to warn Donnie about his role and help him fulfil his destiny, why for heaven's sake not just TELL him, rather than just speaking in riddles and keeping the horror mask on practically at all times...? There is literally NO reason for him not to do so and be so obtuse and

I would not be able to explain the movie with 465 letters

laments terms: Donnie was supposed to die, jet engine tore a rift in time space continuum making tangent timelines which last couple weeks hence 28 days (=end of world). Donnie was the closest one to the Engine so he was granted powers to send the engine back in time to save the world. Frank became a tangent ghost after being killed by donnie and helps him including more of tangent ghosts (they made me do it) Donnie is at peace and dies

@pinigig Thakns for your Take i think you caught a lot of this film that i finally watched lol just tonight, thanx for your take , it is such an amazing movie and very circular, but Donnie going back and accepting his fate and saving the world seems to make sense i need to watch it again a couple more times ;-)
