Pendleton, Indiana (September 10, 2011) the Pendleton Heritage Fair and the Fall Festival, the Spring Valley Quilt Guild puts on a quilt show, "Quilts In The Park", at the Pendleton, Indiana Historical Museum. This year they had over 105 quilts plus a wide variety of quilt related items on display at the museum.
In the18th century and early years of the 19th Quilt making was common. During those times women were spinning, weaving and sewing to clothe their family. And Quilt blankets were one of the primary means to provide bedcovering for warmth and comfort.
During the show this Saturday I spoke with this year's chairperson, Judy Tescher, about the Spring Valley Quilt Guild about this year's show and some of the history of Quilt making in the United States.
Some of the things the Spring Valley Quilt Guild has done over the years and most proud to be a part of was their involvement in is the "Quilts of Valor" program in which they made quilts that were donated to service members who had been injured in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. They also make quilts for Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, and support the Pendleton Historical Museum.
The Spring Valley Quilt Guild holds their monthly meetings at the Pendleton Community Library the first Tuesday of every month in the library's community room.
