We're pleased to announce the reintroduction of Liederkranz, an American-made, surface-ripened snack cheese with a distinctly strong aroma and unique, full-bodied flavor.

Even though the cheese has been out of production for 25 years, the relaunch is garnering a huge response. One loyal customer even submitted a poem she wrote about the cheese in 1969 (see below). People want their Liederkranz!

Liederkranz (pronounced LEE-duhr-krahntz) is an American replication of Germanys Limburger cheese, made subtly different by the use of a distinct bacterial culture for ripening. The cow's milk cheese has the same texture and unique aroma, but features a distinctively robust and buttery flavor. It is made in a small, rectangular shape and has a moist, edible, golden yellow crust with a pale ivory interior and a heavy, honey-like consistency. It is particularly well complemented by dark bread and dark beer and can be used as an appetizer, on salads or sandwiches, or with fruits. As the cheese matures, the crust turns golden brown and the cheese a deeper color. Both flavor and aroma become much stronger.

WREATH OF SONG
by Katy and Ed K., 1969

Thou humble citizen, O Emil Frey
Thou fabricator of the Liederkranz.
From small and quite obscure Van Wert, Ohi
Thy cheese, which equals that of France
Sprang forth unbidden from the reeking sock!
The simple man who tried to make Smearkase
Was summoned from the poor and common flock
To make instead a cheese of utmost grace!
O soft white interior, with a wet brown crust
An odor that makes strong men gag and choke!
The thought of you creates palatial lust!
O Emil Frey, Creator of the Kranz,
To think that this should all occur by chance!

  • My mother taught us to love Leiderkranz cheese. Her father played the violin in the Liederkranz orchestra which is what they named the cheese after. We liked it when it was so ripe it was almost runny! My brother mail-ordered two packs of the new Liederkranz cheese from DCI, and had them sent to me : ) I was so excited to get them! DELICIOUS! Two problems though #1 my daughters won't stop complaining about the smell : ( #2) it's not packaged in that cute little box anymore : (

  • My Dad taught me to love Liederkranz too. He'd only eat it around the holidays so every Christmas and New Year's celebration included Liederkranz, and it hasn't been the same these past 25 years without it. Hooray! it's back! I hope it's still packed in the little cardboard box. The news of Liederkranz returning just made my 2010 holiday season.

  • As silly as it sounds I am gleefully telling my entire family about this. We were huge Liederkranz fans and are pleased to hear that it has returned!

  • My aunt use to put the little box of cheese on the window sill to ripen. It was the best! I've been looking for this. Bought it today and hope it's the same as I remember.

  • Great! My dad used to eat Liederkrantz when I was a kid. Looking forward to it.
