Iraq War Day 17

Channel 4 News bulletin on day 17 of war in Iraq. The US military has its sights firmly focused on Baghdad. The commander of the US air-war says there are now dozens of attack jets and unmanned spy planes on 24 hour alert in the skies above the iraqi capital, ready to support any further US troop incursion. This morning a column of american tanks and armoured vehicles swept towards Baghdad from the south, driving right into the city and provoking a fierce firefight with iraqi defenders. But they didn't stop, instead turning West to join up with the troops already at the airport. Reporters inside central Baghdad insist there have been no sightings of US forces in the city. While US forces encircle Baghdad, British troops remain in position around the second city Basra as the aerial bombardment of the city continued today. And on the outskirts of Al Zubayr troops discovered a makeshift morgue containing what is thought to be the remains of hundreds of Iraqis. British forces claim to have hit a building in which the leader of Ba'ath Party in Basra, so called Chamical Ali, was - no word on his condition. They also claim to have arrested senior members of Ba'ath Party regime.
