Hilton San Diego Bayfront - Reducing Waste While Helping Others...It Starts With Me!

The Hilton Bayfront has gained recognition in San Diego as well as the Hospitality industry for our practices, but we continue to search for new ways to improve our operation, because we know that it starts with me.

One of our award winning practices at our hotel is food composting. We compost all of our leftover food from our restaurants, banquets and employee cafeteria. We have special trash bins, which leftover food is discarded into. From there it is taken to a compost dumpster outside our hotel. Every week the dumpster is picked up by Allied Waste and taken to a Miramar landfill called "The Greenery". Every year we compost over 72,000 lbs of leftover food. With all of the bath products that our guests use while staying in our hotel, we don't throw out the remaining shampoo and conditioner. Our house keepers collect the bottles and put them in a box. When these boxes fill up, we donate them to Lily of the Valley Orphanage. They then transfer the leftover shampoo and conditioner to larger containers to use in the orphanage and donate to shelters. Through this process we conserve thousands of bath supplies a year. Along with composting we also have untouched food that is safe, and healthy. With these items, we donate them to a local organization called Embrace. This organization collects food weekly to distribute to the homeless in San Diego. Through our donations we help feed thousands of people a year. At the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, pollution prevention starts with me.
