This clip from the PBS documentary series Race: The Power of an Illusion details the history of mid-19th century discourses of race, which used scientific methods of observation and experimentation to legitimate the prevailing ideologies of racial hierarchy. Science was enlisted in the debate over the institution of slavery to legitimate the exploitation and subordination of blacks at a time when abolitionists were calling for an end to slavery. Though most of these "experiments" were flawed in construction and at conception, they lent an air of dispassioned "reason" to racial policies of exploitation.
We all do this, nothing to be ashamed about.
