WATCH IN HQ A good cup of coffee= 2.00$, A tank of gas= 40.00$, a good cup of coffee, a tank of gas and and a sunny afternoon in Jasper National Park= PRICELESS!!!
I had some time on my hands so I decided to take a drive to one of my favorite places, the mountains. Jasper National Park is only about 60 miles from where I live so its easy to be in heaven in about an hour. This video is just some footage of some of the scenic spots on the way through the park.
The lake footage is shot along side of Talbot Lake which is about 30 kms east of the town of Jasper along hwy 16. The dust blowing in the wind is shot along the dry river bed of the Athabasca river about 25 kms west of the east park entrance along hwy 16. The river shots were taken along side the Rocky and Athabasca rivers. The closing vista shot is of Pyramid Mountain taken from a lookout at about km 10 of the Maligne Lake road.
THE CAMERA: The camera I used is an Olympus SP-550UZ. I am not a photographer but I find this is an excellent camera that, being very forgiving and user friendly, gives an amateur professional results. I find the camera is relatively easy on batteries but I always start out with a fresh set and two spare sets of batteries. This camera has a massive optical zoom, 18x, that is stunning but because it is so effective it requires the use of both the "anti-shake" mode as well as a tripod. The "time-lapse" mode could be vastly improved as it limits you to a total of 99 consecutive shots with an interval minimum of 1 minute....could be much much better (Olympus take note!!!). As you can see the video this little camera takes is very good, it may appear somewhat grainy but that is the result of the file compression of Youtube and the movie maker program I used. I use several memory cards or each format I am shooting in, it just saves a lot of headaches in sorting movies from stills. I have three 2gb memory cards and use two for movies and one for stills, it really works well. All in all for the price, about 300.00$, I am very happy.
THE SOUNDTRACK:. The soundtrack is called "Chord Sounds" (Southland Tales) by Moby. I applied for and was granted a user licence for this music through Moby's website "www.mobygratis.com". Moby and his website is the quintessential example of an artist and musician with a social conscience. On his website you can find a selection of music which you can use in the production of non-profit works. Simply sign up, cruise the tunes, pick one, apply for a licence, and within a week or so you will receive a link to a hi-res file download of the song you picked. I have long been a fan of Moby's works as a musician and was not surprised at this latest altruistic gesture. Thanks Moby!!!

MOVIE MAKER: To make this little vingette I used "Windows Movie Maker 2". Its very simple to use but is extremely buggy...oh by the way did I say EXTREMELY BUGGY"!!!!!!!!!!...be prepared for numerous crashes. Conflicts with everything including oxygen. Unfortunately the time lapse technique doesn't work very well in this program. The minimum exposure is .35 of a second and the duration minimum is .25 of a second. This combined with the camera's time lapse limitations regarding interval and number of shots makes for a mediocre segment.
JASPER NATIONAL PARK: Jasper National Park is located on the British Columbia/Alberta border. It is one of the most spectacular Parks in Canada. There are numerous websites that will provide far more information than I can but one word of warning: The Town of Jasper: MAJOR OVERPRICED TOURIST TRAP (with not too many places for a decent cup of coffee...bring your own!!!)
RIVER WATER: Before you go batty about me drinking water straight from a river, relax, the river is clean and the only kind of Beaver Fever that concerns me is the kind that is not the topic of discussion while the children are up. But if you are concerned.....then don't drink it......buy a bottle of filtered tap water from Pepsi or Coke (Dasani, Aquafina...seriously...its just filtered tap water and slick marketing......I will take my chances with fish poop, beaver pee and elk turds anyday!!)
GRATITUDE: Occasionally I have to give thanks for all I have that I take for granted. This little video illustrates that very nicely. There are people in this world who will never get the chance to visit the Rockies. Still others who save for years and it is the trip of a lifetime. I only live an hour away from them. There are millions of people in this world who drink water that is dirtier than my toilet water and here I am surrounded by rivers and lakes of clean water, that I can drink. Then there are the breathtaking vistas as opposed to concrete jungles, air that is as sweet as honey...the list goes on...sometimes a person just needs to sit awhile and put life into perspective.
QUESTIONS: Just PM me!!!!
