The first video of a Golden Sun Low Level Game. We fight the Bandits, Lizard Man, Tret, and Breeze.

Not recorded is my fight with Forge, so keep in mind that I also obtained him, with Garet getting all the experience for that.

So a Low Level Game for Golden Sun is one in which Mia is the only one to gain levels, and by the end of the game, after the final battle, her level will be 16, with Isaac and Garet still at 1, and Ivan still at 4. This is done by having Mia be the only one alive by the end of the fight, which is sometimes a challenge in itself.

Why do a LLG this way, with one character getting all the experience? Shouldn't it be lowest average party level? Well, in most RPGs, probably, yes. But Golden Sun distributes its experience a little differently. Say you kill an enemy that gives you 88 exp. In most RPGs, that 88 exp would be divided amongst the surviving fighters. But not in Golden Sun. Instead, everyone alive receives the entire 88 exp. That's why it is best to have the highest level character take all the experience, to make it that we get the least number of level ups possible.

I will be recording every fight throughout this attempt. If it's not recorded, then I didn't battle (exception: Forge. Accidentally recorded over that video). This includes Djinn and optional bosses/battles that will have to be ignored.

This includes Deadbeard. However, I have a videos of a Golden Sun no experience challenge, where by way of a gameshark code, all enemies do not give experience hence levels are the lowest possible. You can find Deadbeard and other optional bosses among these (albeit in poor quality; I will update these videos in time).

If you're wondering, a no experience challenge is not necessarily more difficult than this low level game challenge, because the no exp grants us access to all Djinn and infinite gold and item drops from random encounters, besides eliminating the necessity to keep only Mia alive at the end of the fight. In fact, the LLG is more difficult, but the no experience game is, as I consider it, more enjoyable.

Enjoy!

  • I must ask: Why are the levels distributed so unevenly? Every LLGer I've encountered so far usually shuns any large level gap like that. Not that I'm saying anything against what you're doing, just curious ;)

  • Oh wait, I know why it's done this way now. It has to be 1-1-4-16 because of the way experience points are distributed in this game. So, for example, you fight an enemy that gives 88 experience points. In most other RPGs, you could have, say, two people alive and their both get 44 exp each. But in Golden Sun, all alive characters will receive that 88 exp. So that's why it's done this way.

  • Ohh, that makes perfect sense. Chrono Trigger does the same if I recall correctly, and that LLG has fairly big level gaps, too.
