When on dialysis you need more protein than most people not on dialysis, approx. 1.2 gm protein per kilogram of your weight.

No need to worry about animal protein harming your kidneys as Lighthouse 724 said. They are already not functioning..thus the need for dialysis to do their job of filtering the blood.

(See National Kidney Foundation website for more details.)

  • @ElikaLable i know. though it depends what kind of binders you take too. I mean i do eat whatever i want in moderation but i take at least 2 binders with my meals. it is called Fosrenol 1,000mg that is a chewable tablet that is huge and it works. usually my phosphorous is between 2.9 to 4.6 which is awesome since we all know that it cannot past 5.5. You should try it

  • @staraction thats the worst, as soon as your phosphorus is up its the worst to get down! and it causes heart problems. ive been stuggling on that.

  • @Lighthouse724 if you eat protein, make sure it is a plant based one. Animal proteins (meat) are very hard on the kidneys and liver) it takes way too much energy to digest animal proteins and you need to reserve your energy for healing the kidneys. I am a student of natural medicine..Hopefully this helps. go to the healthfood stor and ask for plant based protein and get a good enyzme please- it will help break down the metabolic waste in the system more effectively. Blessings

  • she forgot something very imporant as well as potassium...it is phosphorous!

  • Can I eat lentils and black eye peas? I hear these are rich in protein and I need to keep my protein up.

  • Rachel, are you sure people want to limit protein when they are on dialysis??? You actually increase protein needs when on dialysis. Prior to beginning a dialysis regimen your protein needs are lower because your kidneys are beginning to fail, but once you start your needs are quite high.

  • thanks for the Food tips u shared... :) keep up the good work:)
