This is not a music video but is in fact a video documentation of an Interactive arts installation that Brain Food Collective were commissioned to build as part of a custom built Art Gallery in a Warehouse space coordinated by NXNW Music and Arts Festival 2009.
The Video contains no dialogue and is built entirely from audio and video clips taken during the week long installation within the workspace.
The project was based around the idea of creating an interactive A/V space from discarded technology.
We used old analogue televisions and games consoles that we had circuit bent and re-wired to create an interactive piece that reflected the technological wizardry of this era in which we live, yet is made entirely from recycled materials.
The true intention of the project was to turn the technologies with which we are ordinarily passive observers into playgrounds for our imagination.
Now Here is the same as above but in Geek Speak and with far more details of the project -
The parts we used for this interactive audio/visual art project were as follows: 4 x TV sets, 1 x original PAL megadrive, 1 x PAL megadrive 2, 1 x Casio SK-1, and 1 x Binatone Pong game.
First both of the megadrive consoles were popped open to reveal the insides to gain access to the video chips. These chips provided weird glitch patterns and colourful 16-bit textures when the pins on each of the chips are combined or connected up to a pot/knob/switch.
The most interesting and favourite combinations of the video pin connections that we found during experimentation are hooked up to a few pots (each containing variable resistor), and the rest are connected up to DIY patch bays built onto each console.
Next we opened up the Casio SK-1 and first added a composite (yellow) video cable onto a couple of connections of the PCB to enable the Casio to send a video signal to the TV to create strange patterns and distortions on the TV, these connections are also routed to another DIY patch-bay, along with the other pins of the sound chip to allow maximum configurations.
The Binatone game is also opened up and connections are taken from the main usable pins of the video chip inside to be connected to the other hardware. All the hardware was then connected to the TV's, one for each piece, and the signal routed to the desired/required channel. The hardware can then be configured and setup to produce weird sounds and colourful video via patch cables from each of the patch-bays and connections, feeding one chip signal to another chip signal, the end results spewing out of the television sets.
The end piece could be configured and experimented with by the viewing public by changing the patch-bay cables and pressing the keys of the Casio SK-1.
The piece was displayed as part of the exhibition 'The Way We Are' for NXNW festival 2009 in Wigan, Lancashire, UK for one week.
