On March 27th, Benedict XVI met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias. The private audience lasted 16 minutes and Christofias was accompanied by his wife, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other officials.The president informed the Pope about the condition of numerous Churches and Christian buildings in the northern part of the island and the Holy Father expressed his desire that the negotiations underway lead to a solution of the Cypriot issue.Finally, the importance of good relations between Catholics and Orthodox and between Christians and Muslims was underlined: all are called to collaborate in favor of the good of society and the peaceful coexistence of all people.
