Roy Jones stops Omar Sheika in the fifth round via a TKO to win the vacant WBO NABO light heavyweight title.

-----------

Roy Jones Jr., making a comeback from his lopsided loss in November 2008 to then-light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe, stopped Omar Sheika in the fifth round.

Jones, who won the regional NABO light heavyweight title belt, was dominating Sheika. He was snapping Sheika's head back and had opened a cut on his face when referee Tommy Kimmons jumped in to stop the bout at 1:45.

Jones (53-5, 39 KOs), a former four-division champion, was fighting in his hometown for the first time since knocking out Ricky Frazier in two rounds to retain the light heavyweight championship in January 1999.

It was also only the second time since 1992 that Jones, 40, had his longtime estranged father, Roy Jones Sr., working as part of his corner after their reunion a couple of months ago.

The pay-per-view card also featured several mixed martial arts bouts. In the co-featured boxing match, cruiserweight contender B.J. Flores won a lopsided 10-round decision against Jose Luis Herrera on scores of 99-91, 99-91 and 98-92.

Sheika (27-9, 18 KOs), 32, of Paterson, N.J., was fighting for the first time since September 2007. He had lost three of his last four bouts.

  • @takoma5 there was nothing back from omar at all, jone's was landing big shots to the face, good call from the referee, yes he wasn't hurt but he was getting a beating, since the ben and mclellen fight, referees dont take big risks any'more.

  • weird

  • the stoppage was a bit early i believe..

  • Omar had a few chances to counter punch,,but hesitated...?

  • @VietzRus ok dude, this was really long ago but if you must go out of your way to comment then ok, i here ya. I did not even remember all this but ok man thats great enjoy the rest of your night or day.

  • Roy, you're a dork.

  • @coates27 Its not just a mental factor you physically get slower, weaker and your reflexes get duller. how fast depends on your genes. B-hop obviously aged better then Jones. And Glen Johnson is not close to 50 hes barely 42. old but not that old

  • Finally I know that he actually can be touched.

  • i think the reff looks at a fighters eyes when they roll and he calls it
