6 touchdown passes in one bowl game! Not many college coaches thought Chuck Long had much to offer when he graduated from Wheaton North High School. Five years later, Long is offering himself to the pros, and his talent is no secret.

Long returned home to Wheaton last week after a trip to the Japan Bowl, his final collegiate game. Questions about his talent have been answered. On Jan. 24, Wheaton will celebrate Chuck Long Day. The University of Iowa has been celebrating his presence the last four years. He led the Hawkeyes to four bowl games and to a Big 10 championship in 1985.

Now there's another honor to add to the list, the Big 10's Most Valuable Player Award.

"It might have been the greatest fake of all time in college football," Coach Iowa Hayden Fry said of [Chuck Long]'s winning play. "I asked Chuck if he thought he was fast enough to run the ball in, but I nearly had a heart attack when he started holding the ball up at the five-yard line."

On the winning run, Long faked to tailback Ronnie Harmon, who leaped into the waiting hands of the Spartan defenders while Long ran untouched around end.

Long's Iowa teams compiled a 35-13-1 record. He graduated with 10,461 passing yards and 74 touchdowns on 782 completions. He held every passing record at the University of Iowa except one (passes attempted in a game) when he graduated. Long holds the best completion percentage of any college quarterback all-time who has attempted more than 1,000 career passes. He was also the first Big Ten player and just the second player in college football history to throw for more than 10,000 yards in a career. Chuck Long was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

  • Great video. Chuck Long didn't have the strongest arm but he might be the most acccurate QB I have ever seen in college football. He was that good. He had a very quick release, too. I remember that Michigan State game and I think they went to the Rose Bowl that year. And those were some fun Hawkeye teams to watch. I think it was Texas they just destroyed in the Freedom Bowl and Long was tossing TDs every where. Great memories.

  • DAMMIT!!! I WASN'T ALIVE WHILE HE WAS PLAYING!!!!!!!
