Very cool tutorial indeed ... I guess it is so simple, when you know how. I will be playing with this technique before too long. I am really more of an InkScape man myself, but I have PhotoShop, so this would be fun to try out.

In Photoshop CS4 the first part of the tutorial when using the gradient tool in quick mask does not give the selection after I exit quick mask mode. Let me know what I'm missing.

@MrShoNuff71 Be sure you have the gradient type set to linear as well as are putting down a Black - White and not a black or white to transparent.
I've not done this effect in a while and am running CS5 now but it should work on all versions just about the same way...
