Breast conservation consists of a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. In the standard approach, X ray treatment is administered five days a week for 5-6 weeks. Some women cannot work this out and need to have a mastectomy.
Dr. Alvarado describes who is a candidate for a multi-institutional trial called TARGET where in the operating room following the lumpectomy, radiation is administered at one time to the area of the breast where the cancer was removed.
Interviewee:
Michael Alvarado, MD, Asst. Prof. in Residence, Surgery, Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center, UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center Michael Alvarado
