October 28, 2001 was the last day of operation for the Kettle Moraine Railway of North Lake, Wisconsin. This video shows the last runs of 2-6-2 No. 9 and 2-truck Heisler No. 3 on the KM. We see the train at the depot, and at various locations out along the line.

  • whatever happened to those 2 locomotives? Did they get sent somewhere else? Or were they scrapped? Just looking at the former line brings a tear to my eye. R.I.P. KMR!

  • The Heisler was rebuilt last year and is now running in Arizona on the "Copper Spike Train Excursion." As far as I know 2-6-2 No. 9 is still in North Lake, but it hasn't run in many years.

  • @jterry618 I think 9 went to the museum in Green Bay but i am not exactly sure.

  • I don't think it's there. I visited in 2009 and it wasn't. The Heisler was there for a short time, but it eventually was moved off to Arizona.

  • @Conducter49 Yup, most of the track is gone, with the exception of the depot area.

  • Have they torn up the rails?

  • They probably also shut down the railroad to beacuse of the increasing boiler safty regulations that the government is enforcing, thats the reason the Eurekas Springs & North Arkansas railroad isn't in the best shape, Eureka Springs also had to stop the steam because of the rising insuance costs once again because of stupid government regulations, and because of the complaining neighbors. the government wants to seemingly destroy everything we like in this world.

  • I grew up in Merton and for as long as I can remember you could here the steam train whistle blowing on Sunday afternoon. It was a very sad day when the Sundays were quiet.

  • You know, the Laona and Northern would be a great place for #9, they have a similar, but slightly larger 2-6-2. They take excellent care of that engine, and a Prarie double-header would be quite something.

  • Suburbia Sucks! I didn't know this was hsut down. I remember going there with my father and riding in the cab of #9

  • #9 and the heisler have gone to green bay ive heard of a third #16 where is she and whyd they shut the railroad down
