I take a look at the early Spectravideo line of computers from the early 80's and how they evolved into helping define the MSX standard.

  • Great Video! My first computer was an Australian SV-328. Great Machine to learn on. And there was a really good Users Group in Australia at the time catering for both MSX and Spectravideo computers.

  • @f1addict Did you belong to that club? Because much of what you see in the 3 parts of this series came from Australia from a former member.

  • We had a Users group here in Victoria Australia which was pretty big in its day.

Started by Mitch Raitt and Malcom Woods.

I still have my riginal 328 with the expansion box and an Express I purchased years later (after Id moved on to IBM clones) I even have the old mags in a folder somewhere.

I liked the easy simplicity of this machine. It must have been good i learned to program on it and I even kept it.

  • I bought a SV-318 on release (don't have it anymore, sold it when I bought the SV-328 that you see in my videos). Both machines have three models. SV-318. SVI-318 and SVI-318 Mark II (same progression for the 328). The Mark II models have better AV options as well as the streamlined motherboard.

I submitted several games & articles to the Australia Users group which actually started in Northern Tasmania. I then later on took over the Computer Forum magazine and then published a follow-on.

  • jeeeeah......my first computer was 328 and i was really dissappointed for games or that kind off stuff

    but....nowadays, i'm rearally good basicder :)

  • I bought SVI 728 today.

Unfortunately it doesn't have a power cable so I haven't been able to test wether it works. It's missing one key on the right side of the up arrow key.

I also have the casette player, one game casette (Sea Hunter) and two game modules (Konami's Tennis and Konami Athletic).

There was no joystick but I just saw one at a flea market just the other day.

I guess I'll be getting it on monday.

Getting the power cable is going to be tricky.

  • Good series of videos, thanks. It'd be interesting to see some games running on the SV-318. Did you ever find that cartridge?

  • Anyone with YYZ in their tag has got to be awesome, I'll sub you.

  • Awesome review!!
