International Campaign for Tibet Board Chairman Richard Gere speaks to a crowd in Berlin regarding the Nangpa Pass nun shooting incident.

On September 30, 2006, a Tibetan nun in her mid twenties,Kelsang Namtso, was shot dead by Chinese border patrols and at least one other Tibetan was injured while on their way into exile in Nepal. Tibetans traveling with the nun were unable to bring her body, with evident wounds from several rounds of bullets, with them because they feared arrest before entering Nepalese territory. The incident took place on the glaciated Nangpa Pass at 18,753 ft, just a few kilometres west of Mount Cho Oyu, and was witnessed by a number of international mountaineers at advance base camp, who saw Chinese military personnel kneel down, take aim and open fire on the Tibetans, some of whom were children as young as ten.

The video footage, taken by a Romanian cameraman who was at advance base camp on Mount Cho Oyo at the time, depicts a line of Tibetans walking uphill through the snow on the Nangpa Pass when a shot is heard and one of the figures falls to the ground. The video clearly depicts that the Tibetans had their backs to the soldiers, were unarmed, and offered no resistance. The nun who died, Kelsang Namtso, appears to have been shot in the back.

  • Thank You Richard for promting the Tibet cause to the world. We Tibetans are highly and deeply thankful to such person who knows and read the mind of Tibetans and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Even we need freedom and human rights. Speak out for Tibet. Bodh Gyal lo means Victory For Tibet.

  • Chinese Gov(not the people) originally thought they could commit genocide by violence.

Now they realize public opinion will not allow it, they have found new ways(forced migration, sterilisation of Tibetan women, poisoning them while pregnant etc.)

They are still wiping out the Tibetans but have learned how to do so without our caring anymore. Gere does a good job though.

  • The current Chinese government just wants to close TIbet and they are not willing to negotiate about Tibet with the other world. At the same time, both Tibetean and major Chinese are suffering from the evil government.

To promote democracy ideas among Chinese and help them to build a new government is the best way to help both Tibetean and Chinese. Much better than just attacking Chinese government, who only care about themselves and even use the attack to propganda Chinese.

  • In order to quell Tibetan dissent, the CCP restricts religious activity in Tibet and created "patriotic education campaigns" that promote a state-sanctioned version of Buddhism. The state monitors daily operations of major monasteries and it reserves the right to disapprove any individual's application to take up religious orders. "Beijing's hope is that ultimately a new generation of Tibetans will emerge that will be less influenced by religion.
