something similar happend to me on june 12,2009 on heavy severe thunderstorm in my area,i heard a big/loud POW POW POW thunder and next thing i know my smoke alarm went off and my tv and vcr went off(power still on) and vcr quit working(even it was plugged in to serge protector)..

Must have been the strike just before the transformer went that lit the palm on fire. That thing was right on top of you judging from zero delay from flash to thunder.

Just after the transformer popped, I saw burning embers floating past my window, ran around the building to find the 30 ft. palm tree in the front yard was completely on fire from the top all the way to the ground, which also had scortch marks.

The transformer did get hit directly, but didn't blow up immediately. The video is a comlilation of clips pasted together, the last of which is the transformer popping.
