  • The grade it's climbing there is @ 3%; typical train load for it is 5 ~ 6 8-wheel cars. It WILL stall on the grade if steam pressure isn't high enough; if you check out the "Live Steam Shay Log Train Ride" video I've also posted, you can hear it struggling a bit going up the grade. (You can hear the coupler slack running in-&-out with each piston thrust on that one!). I came down the grade a little too quick on that one, as a result had marginal steam pressure going back up. ;)

  • @WA1LBK What size of switches do you use & what is the smallest size?I am presently using 332 Piko track & LGB switches on my short line Oval.I really appreciate the size of your layout.Thanks waltm9700

  • I saw a video of a 1:1 scale train doing a 9% grade!
