Bob Shane, the last survivng founding member of the legendary Kingston Trio, performs his solo version of Michael Peter Smith's beloved "The Dutchman," a song of enduring love through the trials of time and age. Though Shane officially retired in 2004 from the group of which he was co-founder and remains sole owner, he still takes the stage on occasion with the current troupe to perform some of the group's signature songs, on which he was frequently the lead vocalist.

On Saturday, February 12, 2011, the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) honors Shane and representatives of the families of his late partners with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the culmination of a career of fifty-four years in folk and pop music for the Kingston Trio.

  • @dutchman909 - I have neglected to thank "mps" for adding his comment here. "MPS" is Michael Peter Smith, who wrote this song many years ago and thus gave us, the music-loving public, one of the classic acoustic pieces of the whole folk era from 1940 onward. Michael has been good enough to link my article on this song on his own website (just Google his name). If you Google "Comparative video 101 the Dutchman," you'll get to the article with 10 versions of the song, including Michael's own.

  • The unequaled baritone voice of Bob Shane. Never get tired of listening!

  • I have had the Liam Clancy/Tommy Makem version of this on their vinyl double album and have always loved it. It's good to hear another version by Bob Shane from the beloved Kingston Trio. MPS YOU ARE A GENIUS

  • Nobody but nobody delivers a song better or more convincingly than Bob Shane.

He always knows what he's singing about.

  • Bob Shane does The Dutchman absolutely perfectly...The Dutchman aspired to be a KIngston Trio song all along and I am so grateful that this very definitive and beautiful recording exists, and so happy that it can be heard here. Thank you Bob, and God bless The Kingston Trio....love, MPS
