Believe it or not, this video has a vague connection to the subject of my previous two uploads (Sierra On-Line), which I'll explain later. It's a clip from Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, a hard-to-find adventure game from the mid-90s, made by the (I believe) now nonexistent Legend Entertainment. Callahan's Crosstime Saloon was based on the series of books by Spider Robinson of the same name, who also sang several songs in the game. This game also has more dialogue, hotspots (sections of the room that get a response when you click on them) and varied response messages than any other adventure game I've ever played.

This is a video of a couple of brief conversations between the game's protagonist (Jake Stonebender, the frame in the lower left) and the bouncer of an ominous establishment in Florescue, a smaller, wackier version of Transylvania (frame in the upper right).

I didn't think too much of this Tor character and his lines until I started acquainting myself with some older episodes of MST3K, and one particular line from one particular episode suddenly jumped out at me and reminded me of CCS, for reasons you'll discover when you watch this video all the way through (and have seen the episode in question, of course). If this really is a reference to the show -- and I am 97.2% certain* that it is -- this has to be one of the most obscure in-jokes I've had the dumb luck to come across and unravel.

*A reference to something even more obscure (if such a thing is possible) -- a variation on one of Manuel Auxverride's lines in Space Quest 6, which was co-designed and written by the same person who designed and did the writing for Callahan's Crosstime Saloon: Josh Mandel. According to the last version of the Space Quest FAQ (c. 1997), the volume of the dialogue alone written for CCS so far was "about the size of a 1000-page novel". (I told you I'd explain it, didn't I? ;) )

  • Found a perfectly good used copy of the PC game (along with a GURPS manual) at a book shop recently. Did I buy it? HELLS YES. Complete packaging, manual were included. Sweet deal for $25!!!

  • Wow. You are one lucky, lucky guy. :)

  • What's a Tor? I don't know, but I'm not afraid of it.

  • That's the big guy's name.

  • Yeah, I know. :D I was quoting the Santa Claus Conquers the Martians episode. (Yes, I'm a giant nerd.)

  • Oh. I should have known...
