  • It is from an interview in late 1967, early 1968 at the Met with Sir Edward Downes, the conductor. Do a search on Amazon with their names and you should be able to pull up a recording of all the segments (there are 11 or so).

  • Yes, it is a fantastic interview.

  • @primohomme Thanks a lot!!!You've been really helpful!

  • @Remalia19

It depends on the breathe support and placement, and those things can take some years to get right depending on your level of vocal development, but more than anything you gotta listen to the style and how singers of the style apply their technique (which I believe can be applied to any type of singing to sing healthy).

  • @primohomme Is legato difficult? I know that it's essential for bel canto roles but when I hear opera singers talking about it, it seems like a difficult thing to master...Legato is to tie together a line of notes with no interruption and maintain the same quality and colour through the phrase, ha?

  • @Remalia19

Legato is connecting the words/notes together as if they were pearls in a golden thread. Take for example Joan Sutherland in "Beatrice di Tenda" or Renee Fleming singing "Casta Diva", and of course...anything sung by Maria :)

  • @raigekimaru I really can't understand the meaning of legato. Can you recommend me some videos?

  • she was a very smart woman. she knew exactly how people thought of her. nothing like those dillusional divas who thinks the world revolves around them.

PS: I wish more singers could here this. the most important word in bell canto is LEGATO. most singers in the 21st century have terrible legato (with a few exceptions like Sam Ramey and Peter Mattei). that's why I listen to singers like Sutherland, Horne, Corelli, Pavarotti, Ramey, Merrill and, of course, Callas.

  • Indeed. Maria's passion for and knowledge of music is inspiring, I can listen to her for hours. I only wish she had given more in depth interviews.

  • When and where was this interview? It's so interesting! And who is the interviewer? I literally devoured every Callas' word!
