He's never really had a chance in a decent car. Sure he was in the HMS 4th car a few years ago, but that was basically their overflow car at the time... they didn't really put much effort into it. Then he was on Redbull which was just in NASCAR for the money as opposed to performance. Anyone who's watched what Vickers can do in a decent car like he had tonight knows he doesn't really suck.
