More videos about Cartrivision. I have had these three videos posted on my site, Labguy's World, for several years now. I decided to edit them together and present them as a set for your educational enlightenment and enjoyment. Both, Peter Berg and Luke Perry, of The Cartrivision Site, gave their permission to use their material here. Thank you, gentlemen. We see the engineers at Barger Corporation working on the prototype machines that later became Cartrivision, the first all American made VCR for the home. I know where these prototype machines are and I have seen and touched them. Shhhhhh, it's a secret! The final company came to be known as Cartridge Television Incorporated. Visit Luke Perry's site for this wonderful story. If you have more info or films, video or snap shots, feel free to contact me, Labguy, or Luke Perry with the information and we can be sure to share it with the world. Any material about any other early small format video tape recorders can be sent to me. Let's not let this part of our technical heritage get lost for all time. Enjoy the video!
WOW! I see my father Dave Nichols and another co-hort Herb Thomas at work here. Was John Lyon present as well? I had one of the prototype machines soon after they closed and had the auction on N. 7th street in San Jose. It was sad as i used to go to work with my dad to this place infrequently on an occasional Saturday. Then there was Phil Smaller of Media Associates after the closure who sold and maintaned these machines. I had several from him as well. I've sold everything now.

I had two Cartrivision units in my lifetime. I only wish I kept them... I learned a lot about electronics and how modern VCRs work, especially heterodyning for low-band color.
Also, as I read the schematics I had for the unit, I learned a LOT about how they accomplished the feat of recording nearly two hours on a full-sized cartridge. It would take azimuth recording to make it record all sixty fields in a second and slow the tape down to where you don't need to worry about guard bands.
