The critically endangered smalltooth sawfish is threatened by habitat destruction by the construction of an oversized development - Bimini Bay Resort. It is not only the sawfish that is under threat - the mangrove and sea grass lagoons are nursery areas for many species of fish, lobster and conch. Sharks, rays and turtles are also found here.
There have been accusations of bribes made to government officials and council members to allow the project to go ahead on land that was to be designated as a marine protected area.
The digging made the local wells brackish so the developers were required to build a water plant to supply the local people - trouble is that when the developers are using lots of water the local people are left with none.

  • Hi everyone. Just to reiterate: The North island of Bimini has been declared a nature sanctuary which means that Phase II will not go ahead!!

The maximum (disputed) length for a GW is around 23 feet from memory. 30 feet would be a whopper!

In general if you are going to post here could you make sure that you are considerate to each other - there is really no need to start calling each other idiot.

(jbrochford - I think you meant your comments for h8thesox620, not HEATofEAST92.)

  • Hi Everyone - just to let you know that the wider campaign of which this film is part was successful! The North island of Bimini has been declared a nature sanctuary which means that Phase II will not go ahead. Great news....obviously things may change if the government changes but until then...

  • I hate HIlton, I use to love to go to Bimini years ago. Now, they have destroyed the place. I sent them a letter and received a BS response. The Bahamian govt should be ashamed at what they have done. Somebody should be hung.

  • @cinemaquatics Hi I have been looking at the websites about saving bimini, nothing has really been reported since 2009, the resort and golf course has been built what is left? This has really upset me but I am very happy to read that your campain has helped. I have never been to Bimini but I grew up in Florida and can imagine how devestating it would be if the mangroves i loved were destroyed.

  • if i may quote from Wikipedia: "the largest great white shark verified and endorsed by experts was 6.4 m (21 ft) long and had a body mass of about 3,324 kg (7,330 lb)"

the 23 foot long specimens are estimates as the animals where sighted but not accuratly measured. that said it would not suprise me if there where GW of that size out their somewhere, probably hunting whales or something.

  • I think that Bimini I used to call paradise is destroyed by greedy people. Years ago,I was in Bimini,it was beautiful, natural. But now what I see I think, bahamian gvt fuck it up. Man you are right. In 80's,Bimini was my place to hang out when I have nothing to do in miami. I took my boat and go there with my friends (males and females) Adios Bimini.
  • sadly i have an apertment there, thats stops today!!!!!!!

  • Nature Sanctuary - THANK YOU GOD! Just got back from Bimini - again, a wonderful trip - and no, we do not stay at Bimini Bay!

  • HEATofEAST, you are hilarious. A 15 foot GW is considered a full grown adult. The Australian GW's are a little bit bigger than the African/Indian/American ones. It is possible but more and more unlikely for a GW to reach 20 feet. Thirty feet my friend...you've been watching too many movies. Never has there been a 30 foot GW recorded.

  • just got home from there. Stayed at the marina on the boat. There was hardly anyone there. The constuction seemed to have stopped. Most the homes were half built. wanted to stay at Big Game Club, but it was closed. Island seemed to be hurting.

  • do you have the source for this, im doing a project on biminay bay and this would be a nice addition
