Treasurer Keating was on the campaign trail in the run-up to the March 5, 1983 Federal Election. He was visiting Perth and promoting deregulation of the banking system.
I'm the one with the red hair and was a journalism student.
After the interview he asked us what we thought the ALP's chances were of winning the election and how their campaign was going.

  • I think it was the 10-week campaign in the lead up to the Dec 1984 Federal election.

  • @dlan1500 Atleast Hawke and Keating could make us laugh and put on a show in Parliament and were not completely hellbent on leaving Australia a complete fucking shitfight, though Keating didnt care for the people. I'll give them that much

  • @dlan1500 Yeap sure keep fucking booting for your boss Gillard and close friend Bob Brown, and tell that fat bullshit artist whos your boss to fucking lose some weight and get out and walk more. Shes a fucking disgrace and Australia deserves to fucking burn with a dickhead like her in the top job. FUCK GILLARD AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER

  • @MsTsarbomba Your kidding aren't you. It took Hawke and Keating to completely reform Australia's economy and open it up. All for Howard and Costello to collect the mining boom revenues and piss it all off in middle class welfare and for labor to carry on this tradition. Home grants, baby bonus, childcare rebate, back to school handouts and now paid parental leave, which will be even bigger under Abbott. There all socialist.

  • @ellicattube Its hard to see a way out of this hole this country has gone down into and the worst is still yet to come it seems

  • @MsTsarbomba Absolutely not !. Gillard is the worst PM since K Rudd. The country has been mismanaged by Rudd Gillard and Swan since '08 and completely fucked up since the Greens have had a say....not to mention a few of the independents. Swan is the most incompetent person I have seen hold any position since Christopher Skase. He's at least as big of an embarrassment to the country as Gillard....and she is certainly no great advertisement for out education system !

  • @ellicattube Are you enjoying the current monopolised Corporate Fascist Socialist basketcase that the Rudd/Gillard team have made Australia in just 4 years?

  • In 1983 I was working for the National bank who had just taken over the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney(CBC). The Profit that year was a whopping $72 million dollars. The NAB profit these days is almost 100 times that.

There was a period in the eighties after deregulation that saw foreign banks like Citibank, HSBC, etc etc enter the retail market. They are still around but far less active and have little effect on retail banking competition. They did create change in the early days.

  • @jdabel1 exactly! what has changed?

  • And 25 years on... We have the most expensive bank fees in the western world. Where's all the foreign banks? There's less competition now that the banking sector is dominated by the big 4 and all the regional banks have been bought out.
