All things considered, that was actually a pretty smooth landing...er, crash. I mean, it was wheels down, and he only lost a wing and the rear gunner.
@KingBlotSven As to why the crew carried side arms, that's an easy one, to shoot at the enemy of course! Keep in mind that these were primarily bombers and recon aircraft. They were armed with a machine gun but that weapon was perfectly omnidirectional. There would have been many occasions where another aircraft might be out of reach and the crew had to shoot at an odd angle. Plus enemy fighters would often get in close enough for a crew to shoot right at the other pilot with their side arm.
@KingBlotSven I should correct my statement. I should have said that I have never heard of an American who committed suicide by shooting himself to death rather than experience the alternative. I do not have much knowledge of British fliers. That said, no one knows for certain how Mannock died nor does anyone know where his body ended up.
@shatros Hi shatros, what about the Mannock legend? I've read that he carried a side-arm in case of catching fire, he sure was an example to many other pilots, so I wouldn't be surprised if many others were having second thoughts about not carrying a side arm just in case. In any case I think it's pretty hard to find out if they actually shot themselves, fire would've destroyed the airplane and it's content . And if I were in such situation I would've tried everything possible to escape death.
@KingBlotSven Yes they had pistols but no pilot ever shot himself with one that I know of. My grandfather was in the 96th aero squadron (red devils) and I have pretty much everything ever written about that unit. It had about the heaviest casualty rate of the American Aero Squadrons so I think it is a good sampling of what was typical. In fact of everything I have read on the topic your comment is the first I have read that sugested suicide by pistol was considered as an option.
@ualien42 I cannot speak to other units that used this aircraft but the 96th aero squadron did not have parachutes. You either came down with your aircraft or you went splat. A lot of pilots and observers died in these.

@Simo84844 parachutes were not standard gear for this aircraft during WWI.

I was wondering, did you survive the crash? I noticed your gunner got ejected. He was there before the crash and he was gone after the crash.
