Bagmati river in Nepal: Lecture by Ajaya Dixit and Dipak Gyawali at IIC, New Delhi, Part IV

The fifth lecture in the ten-part series titled "Living Rivers, Dying Rivers" was delivered on the subject "Bagmati River" by Dr. Ajaya Dixit, Nepal Water Conservation Foundation and Dr. Dipak Gyawali, Former Minister for Water Resources in Nepal and Vice-Chair of the Technical Committee of the UN's World Water Assessment Programme. The lecture held on November 18, 2011 at the India International Centre, New Delhi highlighted the complex challenges faced by the much abused river because of untreated sewage, solid waste, industrial effluents, illegal encroachments and rampant construction along the river banks.
The series coordinated by Prof. Ramaswamy R Iyer aims at understanding what has been happening to rivers and drawing appropriate lessons. A certain number of rivers, some sick or dying, some living and healthy, and some showing early signs of sickness, are being taken up for presentations and discussion, in the series and an attempt made to understand what has gone wrong in many cases, what has gone right in some, and what needs to be done to revive and restore dying or sick rivers.
