MaximsNewsNetwork: 16 March 2010 - UN MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The first of a series of new camps following international construction standards for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) has been built in Haiti.

After the 12 January earthquake caused massive damage in the capital, Port-au-Prince, more than 100,000 victims moved to the nearby community of Croix des Bouquet. This situation caused a logistical nightmare for the local authorities.

To resolve these problems the government, together with organizations such as the Dominican Civil Defense and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have built this new settlement.

SOUNDBITE (French) M. Darius Saint Ange, Mayor Commune of Croix de Bouquet:
The Haitian government and local authorities are working harder to relocate the victims of the earthquake with dignity, and also to provide them food, sanitation and entertainment space for their children as recommended by human right standards.

IOM oversaw the relocation team that built the camp; employing 30 local people from 12 February to 10 March. Twenty-four families have moved to their new tents and given new mattresses and other amenities. In the comings days 200 families will relocate to this camp and 12 more settlements will be built in others localities.

SOUNDBITE (French) M. Bertrand Martin, IOM Assistant Spoke-person:
This site is the first camp built in Haiti after the earthquake which fully respects standards of human living conditions for the victims. It was built following the international rules of construction. We hope that it will be of interest to the Haitian government and other partners in the project.

At the old camp there is no sanitation, no security, no schools and no entertainment for children, but people living in the camp are conscientious that the international community is doing its best for Haiti.

SOUNDBITE (French) Marie Rose Bristol, Old Camp Resident:
Its a very good thing to help us. We thank all the NGOs, which are involved in this action specifically IOM. Also we thank all nations which are coming to help us after the earthquake.

This new camp is also a good example of cooperation between Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic.
