Michael Savage - Rioting liberal college students in California are on the wrong side of history

As part of a nationwide day of protest against cuts to public education and hikes in tuition rates, students, faculty and community leaders marched from UC Berkeley to downtown Oakland last Thursday.
Were out here supporting people, said Karen Ortiz, a sophomore from CSU East Bay, where budget cuts are expected to reach at least $4 million. Weve gone from having 10 classes to just one class. Teachers are getting laid off, salaries have decreased by 10 percent and you know, its tough times.

The National Day of Action for Public Education on March 4 came after the Sept. 24 UC Berkeley walkouts, where over 1,000 students and faculty demonstrated against the massive cuts and budget increases. Most students were protesting the 32 percent tuition increase, which will raise $505 million for the University of California to prevent further cuts according to University officials. According to CNN.com, $175 million is planned to go to financial aid in order to balance the tuition increase by providing assistance to low and middle-income students. The tuition increases will be implemented in the next two years, with UC Berkeley students having to pay $8,373 this spring semester and $10,302 in fall 2010.

My heart and my support are with everybody and anybody who wants to stand up for public education. I salute those who are making themselves heard today in a peaceful manner on behalf of a great cause, said UC President Mike Yudof in a statement written in a Contra Costa Times article. The University is an investment, not only in an individuals well being, but also in the public good. Public education drives a societys ability to progress and to prosper. This states great public universities hold the key to our economic and social growth and are deserving of support by all Californians.

@MrSuperneocon if colleges can charge whatever they want, keep your mouth shut when the economy gets even worse and people are dumber than ever before.

I don't agree with the free colleges but tuition must be lowered. BTW more expensive does not mean better quality. Academic standards, faculty, and course offerings are things that determine whether or not a college goes downhill. Some of the most expensive colleges are the worst.
