  • Woah, that is amazing! I feel like you have this posted somewhere, but I am a bit lazy. How long have you been making terrain, and how much money do you spend per board? Like, just say you has to buy everything from scratch, how much do you think? Again, great job!

  • @Killroy133 I think I have been doing it full time for 5 or 6 years now. Not sure how much the materials cost as I use so little for each project from much larger purchases. Hard to say, but the materials are dwarfed by the cost of labor. :)

  • I'm glad my superiors also find snow effects a challenge too ;) I agree there are so many ways to go about it! I quite like the effect you've created, though if I could make one minor criticism it is that it looks very 'dispersed'/powdery in the areas between the thick snow build up - the effect would be much stronger if the 'earth' areas were a little more pronounced.

I think the leeching is not a big deal, as you say snow is not always perfect white. The icicles look great!!

  • @CustomTerrain when I sealed it, the puddles pulled the snow with them and the effect was more scattered. It was more earthy before that step. ;)

  • @CustomTerrain I saw a neat tutorial from dreamspiritwar on using wax for ice and it looked really convincing. I have feared it though for the durability issue. Not melting per se, just a really soft material. :)

  • @CustomTerrain As for ice build-up along the edges of the river, that would be trickier. I haven't tried it but have toyed with a few possibilities. One possible idea would be to pour water effect and allow to set, then put tape/string along the centre of the river - pour wax over the lot then rip up the tape to leave the centre of the river ice-free, but the wax on the edges remaining. Not sure if it will work, I'll try it one day :P

  • @Terranscapes I've used white semi-translucent candle wax before and it works quite nicely. If you pour it in sheets, break it up.. When you place the pieces in the still-tacky water effects the translucency becomes more pronounced. Wax is also easier to break/shape.

  • @gravey345 I haven't done ice floes before, but I have seen people use clear resin poured into thin sheets and then broken up and added to rivers. A very neat technique. If I do another icy project, I will try to include something like this and show you, but it might be a little while as I don't have any projects like that lined up right now. :)

  • how would you go about making a snowy board... and your usual river effects... but with patches of ice in it... as in some semi fast moving water, you will find ice building around the edges and the bushes on the sides, but in the centre its still flowing... could you perhaps show how you would achieve something like that? Dave

  • @unkhter I think the silicone is a good way to go. Many ways to make them. Good luck and have fun.
