blondemax. Could you tell me where I could get a cheap diesel car? I am not being smart alec, I am serious. The only one I know about is the VW TDI and it is far from cheap.

I guess I didn't fully appreciate most people are American.

In the UK you can get most cars in a diesel format.

Cheap Smart diesels, Toyota Yaris + Aygo diesels (the Aygo is probaly illegal in Americ as the petrol version gets about 50MPG and the diesel gets 80MPG
Ford Fiestas are avilible in Diesel.

In the UK Diesel is more expensive to by that petrol (ie at the pump!) so you generally have to drive >12,000 miles a year to save money in the long run

In the UK for example a brand new ford focus 1.6 TDCi is £16,600 sterling. it has a combined fuel consumption cycle of 57MPG

the Honda Inshite (equivilent in size, 5 door) is £20,000

You could NEVER make that vehicle pay for itself in the UK.

Diesels are nice if you do a lot of highway driving... trust me, I know. Hybrids are good for both.

Cheap diesel is only good for your people who live out in the sticks. For us people who sit in stop and go traffic 80-90% of the time, we need a hybrid to get the 40-50+ MPG.
