Baraka (1992) directed by Ron Fricke

Baraka is an ancient Sufi word, which can be translated as "a blessing, or as the breath, or essence of life from which the evolutionary process unfolds."

The movie was filmed at 152 locations of 24 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Nepal, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States. It contains no dialogue. Instead of a story or plot, the film uses themes to present new perspectives and evoke emotion purely through cinema. The film was the first in over twenty years to be photographed in the 70mm Todd-AO format.

Fricke writes about his work: "I feel that my work has evolved through Koyaanisqatsi, Chronos and Baraka. Both technically and philosophically I am ready to delve even deeper into my favorite theme: humanity's relationship to the eternal"

  • looks good, but nothing can top Koyaanisqatsi, which influenced Ron Fricke to make Baraka (he was also the cinematographer for koyaanisqatsi)

  • I per se like Baraka better. I think this is all up to personal taste :o)

    I like the entire trilogy.

  • man that last song... it just sounds SO familiar but I can't remember where I heard it from. I'm not even that in love with it I just drive me nuts that I can't pinpoint where I've heard it before or what it is

  • The last song in this trailer is called:

The Host Of Seraphim and is by the group called Dead can Dance.

  • I have this on Bluray, and so they say, its the best transfer ever on bluray...

And i can believe them! It looks even better then the good transfer of Blade Runner.

Absolutely STUNNING! Im a photographer, and after watching this film, i have seriously noticed an increased quality in my photography, the best looking film ive ever seen...

Next to "The Tree of Life"

  • @mrthomastoday I preferred baraka, and I prefered powaqqatsi.

  • @SpecialTalent So do I ;) but the previous work of Koyaa started all of this lol

  • BARAKA WINS! FATALITY!

  • @SkateLover2009

I've never actually checked, but one is from World War 2 (Auschwitz I think) and the other is south east asia, I'm guessing from the Khmer Rouge or something similar. I expect it's written down somewhere though.

  • @mrthomastoday I also prefer Baraka. And I haven't watched the whole film yet. Koyaanisqatsi haven't the same quality. Ok. It was made before. And the soundtrack is tiring to listen to, and I'm really into abstract/minimal/psicodelic/electronic music.

  • The skulls in 1:25 was creepy! What happened? world war 2 or what?

  • @TheRussGrant classic

  • I was completely transfixed by Baraka the movie. It's superb cinematography, and sound creations, were simply superb.

The Balinese Monkey Chant is almost hypnotic to listen to.

The crystal adorned cathedral really gave me a sense of touching a bit of heaven.

    Baraka is simply sublime.

    J.:

  • @Pdids01 it might've been used in Gladiator?
