Arcifanfano - König der Narren / Arcifanfano, King of the Fools / Arcifanfano re dei matti
Opera buffa von Carlo Goldoni und Baldassare Galuppi (Venezia 1749)

III.

Act III: When the fools beg for mercy and promise to behave better, they are let out of the cages. In spite of all assurances, Malgoverno immediately tries again to seduce the vain Gloriosa with a rose. To no avail. Even Garbata does not want the rose now; she would rather stick to her wine bottle and encourages the others to drink with her. Finally, Malgoverno even tries to entice Sordidone with his rose, but the latter is -- as always -- only concerned about his money. When Furibondo threatens to take the money away from him by force, Sordidone searches for a place to hide it. Arcifanfano, sensitive and experienced in the art of seduction, makes a first pass at Semplicina, who pretends to be asleep.

The fools want to know from Arcifanfano what the kingdom of fools is actually called. Arcifanfano gives them cards with large letters, which -- after several permutations -- results in the name "THE WORLD" (or, for example, "THIS PLACE"). Since the whole world is obviously a madhouse, the fools decide to leave the kingdom of fools and go out again into the world. Only Simplicina is cured of her shyness through her love for Arcifanfano, and remains with him in the kingdom of fools.
