Sonny was born Joseph Coleman Smith, but adopted the name Sonny Knight when he began his recording career. In the fall of 1956, he went into the Top 20 with what is a quintessential 50's sound and mood in his recording of "Confidential". The song itself was written by Dorinda Morgan, who along with her husband, Dite, worked on the fringes of the music business in Los Angeles and had befriended Sonny after his mother had passed away. Hite and Dorinda Morgan would later "discover" the Beach Boys. Although the 45 rpm of this recording lists "Sonny Knight with the Jack Collier Orchestra", strangely it was the Ernie Freeman Combo consisting of great instrumentalists, Plas Johnson on tenor sax, Irving Ashby on guitar and Ernie himself on piano backing up Sonny. Sonny's recording career would only last a few more years, but he did write a book (under his given name of Joseph C. Smith) entitled "The Day The Music Died" which was published in 1981.
love the piano on this; really very impressive.

The title to this song was taken from a weekly magazine of the same name. It was the National Enquirer of it's time. It got sued out of existence because it made up stuff even more outrageous than the rags of today.
