Roland Barthes might cry if he saw this.

I like that idea of visualizing studium and punctum very much. But I think, the photos should not be zoomed while we watch them, because zooming MAKES A CHANGE. It takes the center of the photo as the center of interest. For example, my punctum in the photo of sinking MS Explorer was the black triangle on the right side. It vanishes!

The Punctum is a detail that pierces that punctures the heart. It is a strong emotional reaction that is unexpectedly found that impacts our mind/memory, making us hold our breath. The Punktum can also be described as that part of the photography one carries in memory after ceasing to look at the photo. The feelings it generates for the onlooker is *love*Usually news photography have no Punctum*** although it is a matter of a subjective interpretation - the descriptions here are too banal IMHO

I'm sorry I have to dislike this, sappy music and zooming in is not photography it does have an annoying slideshow quality to it.
Maybe we should all reread Barthes again.

Thank you so much I get it now!

This video has made me understand the concept of the punctum so much clearer! Thank you :)

Just a word about the "Punctum"...According to Barthes, it is supposed to be involontary...A peculiar thing that just get into the picture to prick you. You chosed as "Punctum" the obvious reasons why the photo has been taken. It should be a detail, something that personnaly strikes you and that probably wouldn't cross the mind of anybody else.

To all of you critics out there, remember that this is done by a first-year college student and is not a Ph.D dissertation.

Ques: "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
Barthes: "I am not Saussure."

Barthes picks photographs from very distinct contexts: using these terms both for a personal photograph of his mother and a shirtless self-portrait of Mapplethorpe for instance, obliterates distinctions between specific contexts of producing and viewing images. "Studium", as the generally coded and conventional, becomes ultimately meaningless - they're images operating within altogether different codes. And "punctum" is even more obviously problematic. I respect the effort, but...
The song is "Your Hand In MIne" by Explosions in the sky
