The Green Family Foundation Initiative and the Dade Community Foundation provide support for the University of Miami Department of Pediatrics' Future Leaders of the World (FLOW) program.
A collaborative program between the university and Youth Expressions, FLOW is an HIV/AIDS education project aimed at urban youth, particularly those who attend alternative schools or are involved in the juvenile justice system. Participants attend training sessions that address HIV-related topics, such as drug use, sexuality, violence prevention and self esteem. After completing the program, they receive certificates as HIV Educators by the Florida State Department of Health (AIDS 104) and are also given the opportunity to receive HIV testing.
FLOW participants also learn about expressive art forms, such as hip-hop, spoken word, dance and comic book publishing. Not only does this provide children with a creative outlet, but it also enables them a medium through which they can spread health promotion messages to others.
