Direct seeding in rice is a resource efficient rice production technology and is the viable alternative to traditional transplanting method. RASS-Krishi Vigyan Kendra introduced this method in 2006 in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India and the practice is attracted by the masses. For small farmers who take rice cultivation in 2-3 acres, the need of hired labour is reduced by 70%. No need of rising nursery, transplanting. reduction in requirement of labour for weeding, and harvesting by combined harvestors are the main features of this technology. Till panicle initiation intermittent dry phases are followed and from panicle initiation to 10 days before harvest, flooded conditions are maintained. The world is pushing SRI method of cultivation which is not catching the farming community, and hence Direct seeding may be promoted which is technically and economically feasible for the farming community.
