Set in nineteenth-century New Orleans, the story depicts the gens de couleur libre, or the Free People of Colour, a dazzling yet damned class caught between the world of white privilege and black oppression.

  • where can i watch this movie? and whe was it out??

  • Again, the DVD is readily available on Amazon and probably other online sites. Well worth it, I must say. As the author, I was very proud of this achievement. And I think it is as timely as ever, the story of the free people of color before the Civil War. Obama's candidacy has probably increased insterest in black history. Anne.

  • Fabulous trailer - great choice in music. Only one thing, that wasn't Ruby Dee that was actually Eartha Kitt.

  • @BesosXOXO123 I thoroughly concur! =)

  • @chsn09 Umm you still sound stupid with that comment cause like I said we dont have a problem professing our blackness only you creol I dont wanna be black motherfuckers do okay have a nice day !!!!

  • @kbediso Haha, You know the bullshit that you just spewed is really funny. UNLIKE black people and AAs, CREOLES actually KNOW what parts of Africa they descend from haha!

I was speaking specifically of Creoles. Look at the comment I was responding to before you make such judgmental comments.

Honestly I would not consider Black Americans to be really black. If AAs go to some countries in Africa they will be in for a rude awakening w/ how Africans refer to U.S. blacks as white or NOT black

  • @Rockstafeller India Arie is actually mixed

  • @chsn09 And what do you think black people are who have had ancestry in America for hundreds of years ?African ? We are all mixed not just creoles only difference is we dont have a problem saying we are black :)

  • @Rockstafeller Creoles are NOT black. We are MIXED =) thanks

  • I bought the book after watching the movie...i know pathetic -.-...but its taking forever to send ima kill myself !

  • @GingerBronze

about the 'black experience' in america in the 18th century - Blackwomen had no protection from anyone or the law. they could be raped at anytime & she would have no way to get recourse from the attacker, to punish the man.

Blackwomen had only their strength & wits to defend themselves.

the truth of american history has not been told, mainly because it is rift with violence, degeneracy, exploitation, & the worst human beings to walk the earth.
