My first Pogues' favorite song.
A classic for ever...

---

I like to walk in the summer breeze
Down Dalling Road by the dead old trees
And drink with my friends
In the Hammersmith Broadway
Dear dirty delightful old drunken old days

Then the winter came down and I loved it so dearly
The pubs and the bookies where you'd spend all your time
And the old men that were singing
"When The Roses Bloom Again"
And turn like the leaves
To a new summertime

Now the winter comes down
I can't stand the chill
That comes to the streets around Christmas time
And I'm buggered to damnation
And I haven't got a penny
To wander the dark streets of London

And every time that I look on the first day of summer
Takes me back to the place where they gave ECT
And the drugged up psychos
With death in their eyes
And how all of this really
Means nothing to me

Now the winter comes down
I can't stand the chill
That comes to the streets around Christmas time
And I'm buggered to damnation
And I haven't got a penny
To wander the dark streets of London

And every time that I look on the first day of summer
Takes me back to the place where they gave ECT
And the drugged up psychos
With death in their eyes
And how all of this really
Means nothing to me

And now the winter comes down
I can't stand the chill
That comes to the streets around Christmas time
And I'm buggered to damnation
And I haven't got a penny
To wander the dark streets of London
To wander the dark streets of London
To wander the dark streets of London

  • Poguetry in Motion,..

  • I discovered The Pogues listening to this song on a local radio station, since then I´ve been a fan.

  • bloody brilliant the Pogues are feckin bril!

  • @Rugby1989Scot

They give you a general anaesthetic nowadays too. In a modern hospital with trained staff and rescusitation facilities available. But it is still fucking barbaric.

  • Brings me back to me army days late 80's early 90's down in the barracks in Cork, thanks

  • Today is the first day of Summer :)

  • ECT is electroconvulsive therapy. Basically inducing a seizure with electrodes in an attempt to 'reset' the brain. Still used for severe depression and certain other syndromes that are not responding to other treatments.

Would be administered in a mental health centre, where other patients were treated with sedatives etc., hence the 'drugged up psychos with death in their eyes'

  • A bugger to damnation and I haven' t got a penny to wander the dark streets of London
