Djivan Gasparyan is an Armenian musician and composer. He plays the Duduk, an Armenian woodwind instrument related to the orchestral oboe. He is the number one solo duduk player in the world - he is THE Duduk. He combines the traditional musical memory of his Armenian homeland with today. East and West in plaintive, archaic, intense, melodious and elegiac and tones. Based in Armenia, where he was born in 1928, he is constantly on the go, giving sold-out solo concerts (with his trio) all over the world.

He has won four world-wide gold Medal UNESCO competitions (1959, 1962, 1973, and 1980). He has the unique distinction of being the only musician to be given the honorary title of People's Artist of Armenia in 1973. In 2002, he received the WOMEX (World Music Expo) lifetime achievement award. He has collaborated with many artists, such as Hossein Alizadeh, Sting, Erkan Ogur, Michael Brook, Peter Gabriel, Brian May, Lionel Richie and Hans Zimmer among others.

  • beautiful Heartfelt Sounds..

  • Utterly awesome! 5 more than well-deserved stars for this most wonderful video! Thank you! :)

  • Oh yes, I recognise the sound of the Duduk anywhere. It is one of my top favorite instruments and Pedro Eustache (among others) plays it so well. (See Yanni's "Prelude & Nostalgia" right here on youtube). Also, Lawrence of Arabia remains one of my all time favorite movies.
